"Japan Faces Potential Nuclear Disaster as Radiation Levels Rise"

"Japan’s nuclear crisis verged toward catastrophe after an explosion further damaged one of the crippled reactors and a fire at another spewed large amounts of radioactive material into the air." -- New York Times

Radiation levels around the plant jumped dramatically after the third blast. Officials said more radiation had been released and issued health warnings, telling people within 20 km of the plant to evacuate and people within 30 km to stay indoors.
