DEADLINE: Knight-Risser Prize for Western Environmental Journalism

Up to $10,000 is available to support an enterprise or investigative environmental story set in the western United States, which is defined as all states west of the Mississippi River, including Hawaii and Alaska. Applications open May 6, and close June 2, with a winner selected in early July 2026.

But the foundation of this wealth has started to crumble. The price of natural gas has plunged to a 10-year low, prompting a flight of energy companies from gas fields across the country.

"Senate Approves Plan To Send BP Fines To Gulf Restoration"

"The Senate approved a highway bill Wednesday that includes a long-sought provision for the Gulf Coast: A guarantee that 80 percent of the fines collected from the April 2010 BP oil spill — an amount that could reach $20 billion — would be distributed for coastal restoration to the five states along the Gulf of Mexico: Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Texas and Alabama."
