Meet SEJ member Bassam Al-Qadhi! Specializing in environmental, climate and science reporting, Bassam has presented in-depth investigations in both Arabic and English, addressing environmental challenges and the effects of climate change in Yemen. His work has included oil spills, marine and environmental pollution, dilapidated ships off the Yemeni coast, overfishing of endangered sea turtles, encroachment on nature reserves and wetlands, depletion of groundwater and the recent effects of climate change on human, water and food security and its devastating repercussions on Yemen. Bassam worked for many years as a correspondent from Aden for the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper. He also worked as a freelance journalist and collaborator with many local, Arab and international media platforms and outlets. Previously, his journalistic work focused on covering humanitarian, societal and environmental issues in light of the war in Yemen. Bassam has won regional and international journalism awards. He is also the founder and president of the Humanitarian Journalism Foundation based in Southern Yemen. For years, it has been one of the most active Yemeni organizations in the field of media, climate and environment. It is an independent, nonprofit civil society organization specializing in humanization and media development.

Bassam has received fellowships in science journalism, climate and environmental journalism, health journalism and refugee affairs from the International Center for Journalists in Washington, the German Foreign Ministry, the Goethe Institute in Cairo and the DAAD Academy.

When asked if he recommends SEJ membership for his colleagues, Bassam said, "I recommend that fellow journalists around the world (and in particular the Middle East and North Africa) join SEJ, where they can develop their skills and connections and find the resources and support they need. I also recommend applying for the global SEJ Awards and participating in its prestigious annual conferences." Join us — apply for SEJ membership.
