The NED annually makes more than 2,000 grants to support the projects of nongovernmental groups abroad who are working to advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions in more than 100 countries, including those that "Support freedom of information and independent media." This annual program aims to improve science journalism and science itself by providing four $5,000 reporting grants for feature-length magazine articles on the funding and practice of science in the US. Deadline: Nov 15, 2024.

Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, member of an Indigenous community and registered in a media program. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of 4 years. Apply by Nov 30, 2024.

The National Press Photographers Foundation annually offers the $6,000 Alan Hagman grant to facilitate projects ranging from human rights to environmental issues.  A creative approach to important stories that might otherwise go untold is highly valued. Deadline: Nov 7, 2024.

The 2025 HKIFF takes place April 10-21. Films must have been completed after Jan. 1, 2024. English subtitles are required for non-English language films. Cash prizes in multiple categories. Entry fees are USD$40 to USD$80. Deadlines: Nov 3 (earlybird); Dec 31 (late).

Journalists from all 46 countries of the Council of Europe, Belarus and Russia are invited to present their best work produced in the past year. They have the opportunity to become Prize Laureates and be awarded 10,000 euro prizes. Deadline is Dec 14, 2024.

This new Journalismfund.eu grant and mentoring program aims to empower 50 local independent media outlets in EU member states and participating countries in the Creative Europe Programme with grants of €5,000 maximum. First deadline is Dec 17, 2024.

The International Center for Journalists' brand-new reporting grants initiative will award $2,000-$3,000 grants and possibly mentorship to at least two winning proposals focused on climate and climate change, and exploring this topic in the Global South. Deadline is Nov 1, 2024.

Using photography as a tool for social justice, this Catalan Association for Peace, International Action Peace and Mas Retina competition aims to offer a look at global problems and the causes that give rise to them. Ten projects will be exhibited in Barcelona, Spain; top project also receives 3,000 euros. Enter by Oct 31, 2024.
