Meet SEJ member Scott Dance! Scott is the global weather writer on The Washington Post's climate desk. He covers extreme weather events and their impact on communities, as well as any news about global climate patterns and climate change at large. Before joining The Post in 2022, he spent a decade at The Baltimore Sun, his hometown newspaper. He reported on environmental issues for the bulk of his time there, tracking the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its flora and fauna, as well as urban ecological issues and Baltimore's legacy of environmental racism. Scott was a 2021 Abrams Nieman Fellow in Local Investigative Journalism at Harvard University. Scott is a 2023 SEJ Award-winner for outstanding beat reporting and a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist for breaking news. He is also a member of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists.

When asked how SEJ membership has made his job easier, Scott said, “SEJ helped me get serious about environmental reporting, awarding me a Fund for Environmental Journalism grant that launched me on a 2017 series of stories exposing how a Maryland program subsidizing green energy wasn't so great for the environment, after all. Since then, the amazing work and lessons I've seen at SEJ's conferences and beyond have helped inspire me to keep pursuing in-depth environmental reporting.” Join us — apply for SEJ membership.
