Meet SEJ member Kristoffer Tigue! Kristoffer is an environmental justice reporter for Inside Climate News, where he also manages the organization's social media and writes the Today's Climate newsletter — a twice-a-week digest and analysis of news related to our rapidly warming world. He holds a Master’s degree in journalism from the Missouri School of Journalism, where his feature writing won several Missouri Press Association awards. His work has run in several publications, including Reuters, Scientific American, Public Radio International, CNBC and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting. Kristoffer's work has helped to hold polluters accountable, illuminate environmental injustices and document the world's often inadequate response to the worsening climate crisis. In March 2021, his story regarding a pollution-plagued and mothballed oil refinery in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which reopened through an expedited permitting process under the Trump administration, helped to open a federal investigation into the facility and eventually shut it down for Clean Air Act violations and what regulators called an "imminent" threat to public health. Now based in New York City, Kristoffer grew up in the flat and cold plains of the Midwest, where for years he wrote about social justice issues, including the police killings of Jamar Clark and Philando Castile in Minnesota. He also covered business and politics, all of which has helped to inform his environmental reporting today.
Regarding SEJ membership. Kristoffer said, "It's important to build community and lean into the idea that you're part of something bigger than yourself. When you care about your community and believe in yourself, it shows in your work, and can make real and lasting impact. Joining SEJ was one of the first steps I took to get rid of those imposter syndrome demons and feel like I'm part of something more important than me, the individual. It helps me stay informed with the latest buzz in the environmental sphere and connects me with like-minded journalists who want to make the world a better place." Join Kristoffer at SEJ today!
