#SEJSpotlight: Carolyn Boiarsky, Professor Emeritas English, Purdue University Northwest

#SEJSpotlight graphic for Carolyn Boiarsky

Meet SEJ member Carolyn Boiarsky! Beginning her career as Statehouse correspondent for United Press International (UPI) in 1964, one of only a few female investigative reporters in the country at that time, she later became a TV news reporter for the West Virginia CBS affiliate WCHS-TV. She went on to do freelance work, publishing in the New Republic, the Progressive and various newspaper Sunday supplements. Eventually she assumed an academic life, becoming a professor of English at Purdue University Northwest and authoring five books on teaching writing. She also founded and directed the Northwest Indiana Center for the Teaching of Writing. She is now retired and combining her knowledge and writing skills to write researched narrative nonfiction, as she has done in her new book, "Lead Babies and Poisoned Housing: Environmental Injustice, Systemic Racism, and Governmental Failure."

When asked if she recommends SEJ membership to her colleagues, Carolyn said, "I would definitely recommend SEJ as an excellent source for meeting people who can help you expand your knowledge about the topics you are covering or considering covering." Join us — apply for SEJ membership.
