TOOLBOX: Database on US Fish Disease

October 3, 2001

As of Sept. 21, reporters and citizens have access to substantial US Fish and Wildlife Service data on fish diseases in US waters. The database contains testing results for a long list of fish diseases affecting many species of fish in sample plots around the country. It can be searched by disease, fish species or location. The database is not entirely intuitive and the data are loaded with caveats. But having the study locations can work as a starting point for exploring stories with wildlife officials about fish diseases on the local, state, and regional levels. See USFWS National Wild Fish Health Survey.
