A coalition of some 60 environmental, fisheries, and consumer groups are challenging Canada's refusal to tell whether it is considering approving a commercial project to grow eggs of genetically engineered Salmon on Prince Edward Island.
Environment Canada has claimed that the mere existence of any application from a company to grow the GM eggs is "confidential."
The groups want to know whether the government is undertaking a risk assessment before allowing the eggs to be grown in Canada. The project is considered likely to go ahead if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves the AquaBounty company's GM salmon.
