Meet SEJ member David Hammer! David is an investigative reporter at WWL-TV, the CBS affiliate in New Orleans. He has been a professional journalist for more than 25 years in print, wire service and broadcast. He won the 2011 SEJ Award for Beat Reporting for his investigation of the Deepwater Horizon explosion. He's won five Emmy Awards, including three for environmental reporting: in 2018 for "Toxic Truth," looking at air pollution in the so-called Cancer Alley between New Orleans and Baton Rouge; in 2017 for his investigation of illicit oil dumping in the Gulf of Mexico called “Oil and Water;" and in 2020 for "Stench of Failure," an investigation of the Jefferson Parish Landfill. David, a seventh-generation New Orleanian, arrived at WWL-TV after a 15-year career as a print and wire reporter, including almost six years at The Times-Picayune. He is proud of his New Orleans heritage and makes it his mission to help improve his community by holding area leaders accountable and exposing fraud and abuse.

When asked how SEJ membership makes his job easier, David said, “SEJ provides great resources for my environmental reporting and connects me with other environmental journalists.” Join us — apply for SEJ membership.
