Corporations Spy on Environmental Nonprofits: Report

December 4, 2013

A new report titled "Spooky Business" documents the startling breadth of corporate spying on nonprofit groups that oppose corporate policies — especially environmental groups. Much of the spying is done by contractors using former government security agency employees — and some is done with complicity or help from the FBI or CIA.

In an era when much of the most important investigative journalism is being done by nonprofits rather than commercial news media, the report raises questions about whether news media and investigative journalists can report critically on corporate activities.

The report was done by Gary Ruskin, director of the Center for Corporate Policy.
