"GREENSBORO — The city stopped pumping water from Mitchell Water Treatment Plant this week after finding high levels of PFOS, a harmful compound that has been linked to firefighting foam and the coating on cookware.
Water production at the Townsend water plant has been ramped up to make up the difference and the city also is relying more on its water partners in Reidsville, Burlington and Randleman Dam, said Mike Borchers, an assistant director for the city Department of Water Resources.
Results released Monday from a July 9 test at the Mitchell plant showed PFOS at 71 parts per trillion and PFOA at 9 parts per trillion, Borchers said. The combined 80 ppt for the manmade perfluorinated compounds is above the federal health advisory level of 70 ppt.
The chemical compound, considered an emerging contaminant, is not regulated, but officials are keeping an eye on it because of its potential health impacts."
