"Deadline Set for Federal Coal Ash Regulation"

"ASHEVILLE — The Environmental Protection Agency will establish rules for coal ash disposal, handing environmental groups a long-sought win and setting the stage for debate over whether coal ash should be regulated as hazardous waste."

"The federal agency agreed to establish rules as part of a settlement this week in a lawsuit brought by environmental and public health groups and a Native American tribe.

The settlement stops short of dictating what the regulations will be, but it confirms the agency will finalize rules by Dec. 19."

Romando Dixson reports for the Asheville Citizen-Times January 30, 2014.
