Anjan Sundaram — SEJ Board Candidate 2024

Anjan Sundaram

I am writing to express my strong desire to run for a board member position in the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ). As an award-winning environmental journalist, I am eager to contribute my expertise and passion to furthering SEJ’s mission.

My environmental journalism career spans two decades, beginning with a prestigious Reuters Environmental Journalism Prize in 2006 for my reporting on Pygmies in Congo's rainforests. This accolade inspired me to delve deeper into critical environmental issues. Currently, I report on Mexico's indigenous environmental defenders, highlighting their crucial work in protecting ecosystems and biodiversity, as published in the LA Times. Their efforts, amidst numerous challenges, motivate me to amplify their voices globally.

In 2015, I was honored with the Frontline Club Award for war reporting in Granta magazine from the Central African Republic. This experience reinforced my appreciation for journalism's role in addressing human rights and environmental challenges. I believe journalism can drive positive change and create a sustainable and equitable world.

Given the defining nature of climate change, biodiversity loss and ecological degradation, I seek a leadership role at SEJ to drive impactful change through responsible reporting. My multilingual abilities — Spanish, French, Tamil, Hindi and English — enable me to bring an international perspective crucial for our diverse membership, primarily composed of freelancers. It is essential to have freelancer representation on the board and to include international viewpoints through panels at SEJ’s annual event. Supporting the diversity fellowship program is also a priority to ensure inclusivity within environmental journalism.

My work has been featured in prominent publications like the New York Review of Books, Associated Press and The New York Times, allowing me to engage diverse audiences and foster dialogue on critical environmental issues.

If elected, I will focus on strengthening SEJ’s outreach and support to environmental journalists globally. I aim to create an inclusive environment that encourages emerging journalists to delve into environmental reporting and provides them with necessary resources. Enhancing partnerships with environmental organizations, academic institutions and policymakers will also be a key goal, promoting comprehensive and impactful reporting on environmental challenges.

In conclusion, my dedication, experience and multilingual skills prepare me to be a valuable asset to the SEJ board. I hope to contribute to advancing SEJ’s mission and supporting fellow journalists in their crucial work.

Thank you for considering my candidacy. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute my energy and expertise to the advancement of environmental journalism and the broader environmental cause.
