Water Insecurity During the Pandemic: What it Means for People Living in Poverty

Event Date:
April 15, 2021

A webinar with Heather Arney, Senior Manager, Insights & Innovation at Water.org, moderated by ICFJ Global Forum Community Manager, Paul Adepoju.

Globally, 785 million people lack access to safe water and nearly 1 million people die each year from diseases that could be prevented if families had access to safe water and sanitation, according to Water.org. As we continue to face the COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever access to safe water is critical to the health of families around the world.

The challenge: The investment needed to solve the global water crisis is three times more than what is currently being applied. In this webinar, Arney will talk about the challenges of the global water crisis and the implications to the health of people living in poverty. She will cover the solutions organizations like Water.org are implementing to help meet United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6, clean water and sanitation for all, and what journalists can do to help cover this issue.

The webinar will answer questions including:
— What is the status of the global water crisis, especially given the COVID-19 pandemic?
— Why is access to safe water critical to the health of families living in poverty?
— What are organizations like Water.org doing to help?
— What should journalists know about this issue?
— Where can journalists get accurate information to cover this topic?
— How does this issue disproportionately affect women?
