MICHAEL KODAS - ACTIVE CATEGORY BOARD CANDIDATE

As the Society of Environmental Journalists evolves to respond to the challenges faced by both the planet where we live and to the journalism landscape in which we work, I believe my wide range of journalistic and educational experience will make me an asset to the organization's board.

In my 35 years as a full-time journalist and journalism educator I've been a photographer, picture editor and reporter for a large daily newspaper; freelanced for large and small publications and broadcast outlets around the world; written acclaimed books; produced or appeared in a wide range of documentaries, television news shows and radio broadcasts; instructed graduate and undergraduate journalism students in environmental reporting, science writing, photojournalism and multimedia storytelling; and run an acclaimed fellowship program for mid-career journalists. I'm a "tri-polar" journalist, having worked in the Arctic, Antarctica and on Mount Everest, as well as in scores of less dramatic sites in between.

I'm also a devoted believer in the mission pursued by environmental journalists and, by extension, the largest organization dedicated to advancing the craft, scope and impact of environmental journalism. I've endeavored to bring the organization a stronger representation of the broad range of journalistic forms, particularly those involving visuals.

As an educator, I strived to give all of my students real-world journalism experiences, which resulted in at least one student in virtually every class I taught having their stories published in national, regional or local, general circulation media.

As a board member I would continue my efforts as a newsroom leader and educator to help the organization move with urgency in its mission to support the most prolific, expansive, substantial and impactful work that environmental journalists can produce.
