Climate in the Trump Era: Can China Lead?
All are invited to a panel discussion at Kings College London, UK, on May 9th, organised by the Lau China Institute and chinadialogue.
US President Donald Trump, who once called climate change a Chinese hoax, threatens domestic climate change action in the United States, and the UN Paris Agreement itself.
Yet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the World Economic Forum in Davos this year doubled down on his support for the low-carbon transition, calling the UN climate accord a “hard-won achievement” that “signatories should stick to”. With the US in retreat and Europe divided, can China step up and lead?
If so, how might it shape global climate action, and what can it tell us about how China is changing?
Isabel Hilton is CEO at chinadialogue and Visiting Professor at the Lau China Institute will be chairing the event.
Panel:
- Jennifer Turner is director of the China Environment Forum at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington, DC.
- Li Shuo is Senior Climate & Energy Policy Officer for Greenpeace East Asia.

- Sam Geall is Executive Editor at chinadialogue and an Associate Fellow at Chatham House.
