"Calif. Firefighters Gain Upper Hand Despite High Winds"

"Whipping winds look set to hinder a wildfire that forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes on the outskirts of Los Angeles."

"The fire tore through 1,700 acres of brush in the San Gabriel Mountains and drove some 3,700 people to evacuate. By nightfall it was no longer advancing and was 30 percent contained, The Associated Press reported.

Meanwhile, three men were being held on suspicion of recklessly starting the fire."

Jeff Black and Henry Austin report for NBC News January 16, 2014.
