Environmental History Conference in San Francisco

The theme is "Crossing Divides" — and the sessions, plenaries, and field trips will be globally diverse. Besides presentations that address environmental history at sites around the world, many panels will talk across languages, nations, and centuries. As a U.S.-based society meeting in California, the American Society for Environmental History is also pleased to present many panels that locate California and the Bay Area in these global debates. The kickoff plenary is titled "Lost in Translation," which is a prompt to "get lost" in the world, making efforts to cross linguistic, cultural, and disciplinary divides. A second plenary will feature environmental poets Gary Snyder and Robert Hass.

The conference will feature sessions on climate change, fire history, forestry, environmental ethics, green justice, national parks, endangered species, and more. Field trips include Muir Woods, Audubon Canyon Ranch, Point Reyes, the site of the Oakland hills fire, and a boat tour of SF Bay. Workshops on oral history and digital history.
