SEJ Member Spotlight: Francesca Lyman

Francesca Lyman is a journalist and author of such books as The Greenhouse Trap: What We're Doing to the Atmosphere and How We Can Slow Global Warming, with World Resources Institute; and a children's book, Inside the Dzanga-Sangha Rain Forest, with the American Museum of Natural History. She wrote the award-winning "Your Environment" column for MSNBC.COM for 7 years, but her environmental reporting goes back to sounding an early alarm on climate change in the 1980s (with a cover illustration that looked remarkably like a flooded, post-Sandy Manhattan), and covering nuclear waste as a local beat reporter for The Record and Passaic Herald-News of New Jersey.

A longtime SEJ member, Francesca Lyman was recently the recipient of a Fund for Environmental Journalism grant, using it to travel down to Sacramento in 2012, to investigate suburban development in the wake of the foreclosure crisis, as a contributor to The Sacramento Bee. In Winter 2013, Francesca wrote a cover story on Hurricane Sandy for SEJ's quarterly magazine, SEJournal.

Ms. Lyman is a contributor and managing editor of the green-building e-magazine Solaripedia.com, and she has written commentaries, profiles and investigative pieces on health and the environment for various newspapers and magazines, including AOL's Patch, Seattle's Crosscut.com, The Sacramento Bee, Popular Mechanics, Ms. Magazine, MSN Channels, New York Times Green Blog, L.A. Times, The Washington Post, and others. While she says she hates to think that she’s helping Entertainment squeeze out Environment coverage, she has recently found satisfaction (and therapy) writing theater and music reviews.
