Tornado Touches Down In New Orleans, Killing One And Damaging Houses

"More than 16,000 lose power; houses destroyed".

"A tornado pummeled Arabi and parts of New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward on Tuesday night, killing one person, knocking out power to thousands of residents and destroying houses as severe thunderstorms swept northeast across the region.

Roofs in the Arabi area of St. Bernard Parish were sheared off, utility poles were knocked over and trees were toppled. On Friscoville Avenue, neighbors emerged from their houses to check on one another and worried aloud about the smell of natural gas as police searched the area.

"We have reports of people [who] are trapped," St. Bernard Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann said. "We're in the area doing assessments now.""
