Iota To Hit Central America As An 'Extremely Dangerous' Cat 4 Storm

"Hurricane Iota has rapidly strengthened into a major hurricane as it approaches Central America, where it's expected to make landfall as an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm Monday night.

Iota has maximum sustained winds of 140 mph and is forecast to have a life-threatening storm surge of 10 to 15 feet along with rainfall of 1 to 2 feet, according to an advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

The storm is moving west at about 10 mph and is about 45 miles off the coast of Isla de Providencia, Colombia. Iota is threatening many hard-hit areas of Central America, where people are still recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Eta."
