"An Arizona-based environmental group is hoping to stop construction of President Donald Trump's long-promised U.S.-Mexico border wall in protected Arizona wilderness that harbors dozens of endangered or threatened species.
On Tuesday, Tucson's Center for Biological Diversity filed a preliminary injunction in U.S. District Court in Washington D.C., seeking to block construction on the wall until a judge rules on the group's pending lawsuit.
That suit, filed in July 2019 with Defenders of Wildlife and Animal Legal Defense Fund, challenges the government's decision to waive environmental and public health laws, claiming it did so only to expedite construction.
The groups want construction stopped within three Arizona federal preserves: Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and San Pedro Riparian National Conservation area. "
