Thank you for giving me this opportunity to express my intent to run for SEJ's Board of Directors in the 2024 board election.
My Bio Info:
I am a Zambian multi-award-winning international journalist, who often reports on development issues including ICTs, human rights, environment, business and politics, working with a number of organisations, such as Bilgrade Media, Efficacy News and DW (Deutsche Welle).
My awards and recognitions include Top ICT Journalist in Africa, Best Female Reporter on ICT for Development Issues in Africa, Proven Leadership Award and others.
I have been an active member of SEJ since April 2019 and attended the SEJ 2023 Annual Conference in Boise, Idaho.
My Vision For SEJ:
SEJ is an excellent society, which I would like to see become even greater and bring more inspiration and innovation to environmental journalists around the world, with the annual conference becoming the largest gathering of media practitioners in the world.
My Purpose For Running:
Being one of the Board of Directors, in such a reputable organisation, would be greatly beneficial to my career and would enhance my organisational, leadership, managerial and networking skills and opportunities, thereby opening up new prospects for me, but my main reason for running is to be able to contribute towards the following:
Broadening SEJ's Visibility and Reach:
SEJ is growing and having more members from different parts of the world, so I want to be the focal point or link to Africa, who would promote and help it expand further, in this part of the world and beyond. I would do that by tapping into some of my existing networks, locally and internationally.
As I had suggested, when I attended the 2023 SEJ conference, I think the Society’s visibility would be enhanced if we were to have chapters in other countries, such as in Africa, and having a board member from the continent, especially a passionate one, would help that cause. I Am that person.
As a board member, the contributions I would make would also include suggesting/creating ways in which some SEJ Members could participate in exchange programmes in Africa, or/and intern with media/environmental organisations, here, among other initiatives.
Sharing Best Practices:
African journalism can benefit from some of the effective ideas that SEJ produces and executes in America and vice versa and I would ideally be the conduit for sharing best practices. This would help keep environmental journalists around the world connected and on the same page, thereby meeting SEJ's objective of 'strengthening coverage of environment and related news'.
Conclusion:
I have a solid experience in journalism, passion, time, energy, ideas and commitment towards achieving SEJ’s objectives and serving the SEJ membership, excellently, which I believe makes me an ideal candidate and a great addition to the Board of Directors.
Thank you!
