Peter B. Lord Seminars on the Environment

Event Date:
September 20, 2013

Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting established the Peter B. Lord Seminars on the Environment to honor Lord’s outstanding contributions to environmental journalism. Lord, who died in April 2012 after battling brain cancer, served as Journalism Co-Director for Metcalf Institute from 1997-2012. He was widely respected as a teacher, mentor and standard-bearer for excellence in environmental journalism in Rhode Island and beyond.

About the Peter B. Lord Seminars on the Environment

Each of the seminars in this six-part series is free and open to Southern New England journalists reporting for Rhode Island audiences. The day-long seminars are designed to help journalists better understand critically important environmental concerns facing Rhode Island citizens by enhancing their understanding of the science behind the stories they cover. The seminars will give reporters the tools they need to dig deeper, build strong contacts and ask the right questions as they investigate pressing environmental issues in our region.

The seminars will feature scientists and various stakeholder groups including regulatory agencies, environmental advocates, community groups, and business interests and will focus on the following topics:

Climate Change Impacts in Southern New England – October 12, 2012
Adapting to Climate Change: Planning for an Uncertain and Expensive Future – November 30, 2012
Innovations in Renewable Energy: Profiting from Environmental Protection – March 15, 2013
Making Sense of Beach Closures, Shell Fishing Bans, Water Advisories & More – July 12, 2013
Predicting and Responding to Extreme Weather Events – September 20, 2013

How to Register for the Seminars

Journalists are required to register separately for each seminar. Space is limited and registrations will be confirmed as received. Priority will be given to journalists reporting for Rhode Island audiences. Check the seminar website for registration deadlines for each session.
