Measure Locally, Respond Globally

Event Date:
August 15, 2016 to August 16, 2016

Join colleagues and experts for a hands-on, interactive mini-conference. MEASURE LOCALLY, RESPOND GLOBALLY is a two-day meeting for journalists to learn about the next phase of the climate change story, Aug. 15 and 16 in Asheville NC.

Asheville is starting to call itself “Climate City,” because it is home to the world’s largest collection of weather and climate data and an entrepreneurial center for climate-based businesses.

We’ll visit a US Forest Service research station that has captured data every 5 minutes since 1934 and see a seedbank preserving more than 2,000 regional plant species against the growing threats of invasive species, human encroachment and climate change. Then we’ll show you how to tap into more than 20 petabytes of data in NOAA’s climate monitoring headquarters to make your stories richer.

Finally, we’ll socialize with some of the Asheville entrepreneurs who are developing new business opportunities around this “Big Data” and climate change. They’ve moved past the ‘debate’ over climate change to figure out what we should do next.

Throughout this small, conversational meeting, you’ll be able to engage with experts, rather than just sitting through lectures. Measure Locally, Respond Globally is sponsored by the National Association of Science Writers, Duke University, NC State University College of Engineering, NOAA, the USDA/USFS Southern Research Station and The Collider, an innovation center for climate-based businesses in Asheville.

Space in the conference is limited to 50 participants to ensure good access to experts, and our reduced rate on the hotel rooms expires July 17, so please hurry!

We hope you’ll join us to learn more about what’s next. Please check out the program, or feel free to shoot us any questions.

NOTE TO BROADCASTERS: If would like to cover some of these stories while you’re with us, we’re providing a pool videographer to capture interviews, standups and b-roll that will be uploaded to the cloud for you to share with your newsroom back home. No need to lug equipment or crew; all you need is your own mic flag.
