Event Date:
January 30, 2022

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in collaboration with ONE and the Elliott family seek entries for the annual Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling, honoring two up-and-coming journalists in Africa who strive to strengthen people's voices and illuminate the transformational change taking place on the continent. Deadline: Jan 30, 2022.

Entries, published between December 1, 2020 and December 1, 2021, will be selected on the quality of the piece and the impact their work has had in communities. We welcome excellent submissions in all media, especially those that demonstrate analytical skills in addition to outstanding writing ability.

In a special study tour organized by ICFJ, past winners have spent time in U.S. newsrooms in Washington, D.C., and New York City to learn new skills and share knowledge. In 2019, the winner also completed a two-week internship at The Economist's headquarters in London, United Kingdom. Winners also receive a $5,000 cash prize.

In 2021, two winners received a $5,000 cash prize and were invited to take part in a virtual internship with prestigious media outlets where they will have access to editorial meetings and media experts and share their own experiences with top journalists.

To take full advantage of the training opportunities offered, applicants must speak English, even if they work in another language.
