DEADLINE: Advancing Democracy Fellowship

Event Date:
January 22, 2024

The Advancing Democracy Fellowship is designed to help newsrooms think big, plan long term and reinvent coverage of politics, governance and elections with and for their communities.

A joint effort by Hearken, Trusting News and Solutions Journalism Network, the fellowship has already helped nearly 20 newsrooms revolutionize their political coverage.

We are inviting 20 U.S.-based newsroom teams of at least one reporter and one editor to join this adventure. This fellowship is for U.S.-based newsrooms ranging from print, digital, radio and broadcast. Preference will be given to newsrooms in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania Texas and Wisconsin and we welcome applications from newsrooms from other states as well.

All newsrooms accepted into the fellowship will commit to investing an average of 10-12 hours a month per participant for training, plus time for putting training into practice, tracking progress toward the goals set, and participating in program-related surveys or research. You will leave this program with new tools, resources, skills and a community of practice, and every newsroom is awarded up to a $5,000 stipend to spend towards reaching their fellowship goals.

We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis and awarding fellowships until our program is filled (approximately 20 newsrooms).

Newsrooms serving and led by historically excluded communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Attend the AMA on Jan. 9 about the fellowship and apply by Jan. 22, 2024.
