#SEJSpotlight: Shannon Osaka, Climate Policy and Solutions Reporter, Grist [1]
![]() |
Meet SEJ member Shannon Osaka! Shannon is a climate policy and solutions reporter at Grist, currently based in Seattle and originally from San Jose, CA. Her favorite stories dive deep into ideas — the debate over degrowing the economy, the perils and promises of carbon pricing, or the push to declare a ‘climate emergency.’ Shannon has a master's degree in geography at the University of Oxford and still occasionally pens an academic article or two on the side. She is also a member of the Asian American Journalists Association [2] (AAJA).
Shannon joined SEJ last June, so is looking forward to attending her first in-person conference. She's found SEJ membership has made her job easier "by helping to connect me to other environmental journalists."
Here are samples of Shannon's Grist stories:
- "Will the Ford F-150 Lightning turn Middle America onto EVs? [3]" May 20, 2021.
- "Why Biden's climate agenda might be very, very ‘quiet’ [4]," Mar 23, 2021.
- "A border tax could clean up international emissions — or spark a trade war [5]," Mar 17, 2021.
- "The EV tax credit can save you thousands — if you’re rich enough [6]," Feb 26, 2021.
- More [7].
