Join California Newsroom reporter Molly Peterson and Data Reporter Dillon Bergin to learn about their recent investigation “Smoke, Screened: The Clean Air Act’s Dirty Secret,” a collaboration of the California Newsroom, MuckRock and the Guardian. Molly and Dillon will guide you on turning a question into an effective public records request, and public records into data that you can mine. They will offer tips on what they learned after filing FOIA requests with all 10 EPA Regions and dozens of other requests at the state and local levels during this investigation. Along the way, they will suggest how you can build on their reporting and use data unearthed in the project to scrutinize air pollution erased from the regulatory record near you.
