"Opponents Seek To Derail Montana Coal Line" [6]

"BILLINGS, Mont. -- Opponents of a railroad that would open Montana's coal fields to new mining have asked federal officials to halt their review of the proposal, alleging it would be much larger than disclosed with impacts stretching to the West Coast."

"Cyberstalkers Threaten Pipeline Security" [12]

"In a recent  annual review, a team at the Department of Homeland Security that works to counter  the threat of attacks  on critical computer infrastructure counted 198 incidents in fiscal 2012. The events reported ranged from the use of malware to sabotage systems to phishing attacks for retrieving  sensitive information. In roughly 40 percent of those cases, the target was the energy sector – 'an alarming rate,' the report said."

"Alaska Oil Rig's Lifeboats May Have Leaked Fuel, Coast Guard Says" [16]

"Lifeboats from an oil rig that was temporarily grounded on a small island in southern Alaska may have leaked as much as 272 gallons of diesel fuel into pristine waters along the shoreline, but that cannot be determined until a full inspection is completed, U.S. Coast Guard officials said."

A panel of veteran journalists, hosted by SEJ and the Wilson Center's Environmental Change & Security Program, will offer their thoughts on what will be the biggest environment and energy stories in the U.S. and around the world on January 25, 3-5 p.m. in Washington, DC (also available via webcast). Bloomberg BNA's Director of Environmental News John Sullivan will kick off the discussion with an overview of the key legislative, regulatory, and legal developments expected in 2013. "Shale Oil Output Anchors a Record Growth In U.S. Production" [33]

"Drawing on growing output from the Bakken and Eagle Ford shale plays, U.S. crude production averaged 6.4 million barrels a day last year, a gain of 800,000 barrels daily over 2011 -- the largest annual increase since the birth of the U.S. oil industry in 1859, the Energy Information Administration said yesterday."

N. Carolina: "Environmental Groups Seek Clean Up of 14 Coal Ash Pits" [40]

"RALEIGH -- Conservation groups filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the state Environmental Management Commission, Duke Energy and Progress Energy seeking the cleanup or shut-down of 14 ash pits that collect tons of waste from coal-burning power plants across the state."
