TVA IG Says Agency Let Lawyers Stifle $3 Million Study on Coal-Ash Spill Causes [1]

July 29, 2009

The Tennessee Valley Authority let its lawyers stifle a $3-million study of what caused last year's massive coal-ash spill in hopes of limiting its legal liability, the utility's inspector general reported.

"The report also said the nation's largest public utility failed for more than 20 years to heed warnings that might have prevented the spill," the Associated Press reported.

TVA execs were called on the carpet before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee July 28, 2009, to account for their conduct, as documented in a 111-page report from TVA Inspector General Richard Moore.

TVA President and CEO Tom Kilgore told the House panel "opportunities were missed."
