Sunshine Week Focuses on Freedom of Information and "Local Heroes" [1]

This year's Sunshine Week will highlight the roles of citizens as "Local Heroes" in achieving government accountability and transparency through open information and open meetings. Sunshine Week is spearheaded by the American Society of News Editors with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Gridiron Club — with collaboration by a large number of coalition member groups.

  • The Collaboration on Government Secrecy, based at American University's Washington College of Law, will hold an all-day symposium on FOI legal issues in Washington, DC on Monday, March 14. More information on the program here. [3]
  • A national coalition of open government groups, OpenTheGovernment.org [4], will be celebrating Sunshine Week with a webcast of a panel discussion on Friday, March 18, from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST. More information about the program is available here. [5] 
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the Freedom of Information Act Tuesday, March 15, in the Dirksen Senate Office Building (Rm. 226). More information here. [6]
  • The Freedom Forum will hold an all-day meeting for the 13th annual National Freedom of Information Day at the Newseum in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, March 16. Program information here. [7]
  • The Sunlight Foundation will celebrate Sunshine Week by probing lobbying reform. Experts will explore the subject Monday, March 14, in the Rayburn House Office Bldg. (Rm. 2203). Program information here. [8]
