TOOLBOX: NOAA Launches New Flood Forecast [1]

October 3, 2001

Reporters in some flood-prone communities now have a new forecast tool to help their audience anticipate floods. On Sept. 1, 2001, the Natl. Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin. unveiled a 5-day flood forecast "test product" covering coastal states from NJ to TX. Press release [2]. Web site [3]. Inland floods cause a major share of the deaths, injuries, and property damage from hurricanes. Major hurricanes are still possible during the remainder of the Atlantic hurricane season. See August 22, 2001, TipSheet [4]. NOAA already operates a national network of daily river forecasts.
