TVA Announces Decision to Retire Memphis' Allen Fossil Plant [1]

"The Tennessee Valley Authority board of directors voted Thursday to retire the Allen Fossil Plant in Memphis, and a new, combined-cycle natural gas plant will be built nearby.

The board said that a natural gas plant with 1,000 megawatt per hour generation capacity was "the only feasible option in terms of immediate system needs."

These needs include reliability, diversity of energy portfolio, operability and compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Act."
