"Senate Democrats are concerned about lead-based paint in public schools after auditors found that only 12% of districts inspected their campuses for the toxins during the 2016-17 school year.

Sens. Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Patty Murray of Washington requested that the Government Accountability Office "study inspection and remediation efforts used to protect children from exposure to lead in schools."

The conclusions released Wednesday found that about 15.3 million students were in districts that tested for lead in paint, compared with 22.4 million students in districts that did not test."
