EPA Sets Dioxin Cleanup Plan for Tittabawassee Floodplain [1]

"The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected a plan to clean up dioxin contaminated properties along the Tittabawassee River floodplain and work is expected to start this year.

The floodplain includes about 4,500 acres and portions of more than 700 property parcels extending along 21 miles downstream of The Dow Chemical Co.’s Michigan Operations site in Midland. Pollution came from past disposal practices and historic flooding at the site.

As part of the EPA’s decision, Dow is responsible for completing soil removal if properties contain contamination above site-specific cleanup levels that vary based on how the property is currently used."
