Wild Deep Yonder: Covering Piracy, Overfishing, Mining and Other Crises Above and Below the Surface

A Kavli Conversation on Science Communication with Ian Urbina, Helen Scales and Douglas Main

Douglas Main of National Geographic will moderate this conversation with award-winning investigative reporter Ian Urbina and marine biologist/author Helen Scales. Previously a New York Times reporter, Urbina began the Outlaw Oceans Project, expanding on his remarkable reporting for the Times, the New Yorker and elsewhere on piracy, overfishing and other crises afflicting the planet's oceans. Scales' latest book, "The Brilliant Abyss," focuses on the amazing life forms of the benthos and examines the threats posed by deep-ocean mining. Q&A to follow.

When: October 5, 2021; 6:30-8:00 p.m. ET

Watch the recording [1]. See how Urbina uses silence as an interviewing technique, and more details about the nonprofit he has launched and where its revenue is coming from (in part, music!).

Kavli Conversations are hosted by NYU’s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program with support from the Kavli Foundation.
