On May 3, 2021, World Press Freedom Day, the Society of Environmental Journalists' partners at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press released its latest analysis on the data collected by the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker in 2020, revealing the startling extent of police violence against journalists during a year of protest.
This year's report reflects how the importance of the Tracker came into sharp focus in 2020 –– only the fourth year of its existence –– when the country faced a wave of protests, and journalists covering those protests faced a record number of 139 arrests and 438 physical attacks. In addition, journalists faced 31 subpoenas, 2 prior restraints and 110 cases of equipment damage.
